Government & Civic Involvement Commission
The Government and Civic Involvement Commission will focus this year on making sure your city or township leaders are aware that the Jaycees are alive and making things happen. From a one-on-one meeting with your elected leadership to a full-fledged partnership with your local government, we can begin making the Jaycees an integral part of your community - an organization that can be counted on. Our goal this year is to also increase knowledge of what is really involved in this area.
A few ideas to get things started…
Community Roundtable
Leadership Breakfast
City/Township Council Visits
County Board Meeting Visits
Mayor’s Night Hosting
Coffee Nights with State Legislators or U.S. Congressional Representatives
New Voter Registration
Get Out The Vote (GOTV) Activities
Many of your communities sponsor seasonal activities at the recreational centers. The Jaycees can become a visible part of these activities by volunteering to assist in the planning and implementation of these events: Egg Hunts, Halloween Parties, Thanksgiving Parades and Christmas Tree Lighting. Such events as these can be small projects and others, well, major undertakings.
The annual project of this commission is Model Legislature. Tentatively scheduled for March, the Michigan Jaycees will gather in the Lansing capitol to demonstrate how the State Legislature works and how bills become law. Majority and minority leadership will be elected and the day will begin with trainings by real State Representatives. We look forward to a productive day in the House and for our Jaycee membership to leave the capitol with an understanding of just how important the activities and decisions of our elected leaders are to our communities.
