How Thermal Imagers Work
Firefighters use thermal imagers on the job to help them perform a variety of tasks. With the help of a thermal imager, firefighters can see a “heat picture” of their environment, which enables them to see through thick smoke and navigate in zero visibility to identify victims, pinpoint fires and see structural dangers before they put firefighters at risk.

Thermal imagers translate the natural thermal energy present in all objects into a viewable image that is displayed as a black and white picture on a screen. Hottest objects show as white, coolest objects show as black, and features of other objects show in varying shades of gray.

Thermal imagers enable firefighters to identify areas of extreme heat, making it possible
to find hidden fires in walls and ceilings.

Thermal energy from victims allows them to be seen clearly on the screen,
even in zero visibility smoke-filled environments.

Thermal imagers serve as a valuable tool for tactical operations, enabling incident commanders
to allocate and manage resources effectively.

Bullard Thermal Imager Project
An estimated 75 percent of fire departments in the U.S. are without thermal imagers, tools that have gained worldwide recognition as the most important new equipment in firefighting. These infrared devices give firefighters a “thermal picture” or a “heat picture” of a scene, enabling them to see through smoke to identify victims, pinpoint fires and see structural dangers before they put firefighters at risk.

How can a Jaycee Chapter help? Bullard, the leader in thermal imaging for the fire service, provides free instruction and support that will help chapters plan and execute effective thermal imager fundraising campaigns. The inSIGHT program aims to enable a much greater number of fire departments to acquire these critical tools.

If your chapter is interested in raising funds for this critical piece of equipment, click here to register for your free fundraising kit.
